How to appraise the translation quality level?

Translation quality appraisal problem primarily is that a reviewer should know both the original version subject and the language which the text is translated from, and understand all the niceties and particularities of the translator’s job. At any rate customer will be the chief appraiser of the translation quality as the translator’s main objective is to convey the contents of the text in such a way as the author would do it himself as if he knew the reader’s native language. In this view the best way is to pull together with “one’s own translator” who would realize how “to present” translation for you specially. But if you do not have “your own translator”, or all of a sudden a quite a different subject your specialist is not used to work with appeared contact a professional translation agency. That will make much more sense as they will select a translator as ideal as possible!

But if you have already contacted a translator with no experts involved in selection try to appraise translation quality using simple enough instructions. In this case you will at least make clear the basic points. Then:
  • Compare translation volume with the original version volume including number of table columns and items;
  • Check concordance of signs, for example, percent signs (%), division signs, currency and copyright symbols. If they are identical in all the parts concerned it is an excellent cause for considering that your translator did well, and did not omit parts of the text;
  • Also compare digits, they are as “indicators” as signs are;
  • Check whether names are written correctly (you would better put down names in the required language alphabet on a separate sheet of paper to be submitted to your translator in advance if you of course have information how they shall be transliterated);
  • Make sure that seals in official documents are translated, and not represented as pictures with the original version lettering;
  • Check all the pictures in general, whether any word of the original version language is left in the translation.

And then you will be able to check basic points at least. But you would better place an order if not for translation but for translation editing with us. We will manage to do that!
