Technical translation

What is a technical translation and how is it characterized?

Texts, which technical translators are working with, can be technical and scientific and technical. For example, it can be:
  1. Instructions to any equipment and electronic device, the user's guide to any software.
  2. Specifications and their sheets, listings and catalogs of various technical documentation and versatile projects and work materials.
  3. Certificates and permissive documents to equipment, technical data sheet.
  4. Standards and legislative acts which regulate the working procedures of engineers and builders (for example, GOST, DIN, GMP, CONSTRUCTION NORMS AND REGULATIONS or ISO).
And what are the main features of these texts? That is, at least, the complexity. They have a great number of specific phrases and speech patterns, which are used only in books, but not in speech. Respectively, any translator should be very responsible while working with suchlike texts - and in our translation bureau similar texts constitute about a half of the whole number of translations, therefore we have to keep enough number of technical translators in our staff.

The technical translator ought to know terminology, to have deep knowledges in the corresponding area (technical education is preferable) and to understand the similar-section abbreviations and contractions. And it is important to be able to translate strictly and shortly - technical translation should not have any stylistic coloring, otherwise a reader will be able to understand the content of the text doubly, but it is important to understand it not doubly, but particularly the true meaning of it.

It is very important to know how to use dictionaries and the glossary - even the best expert will hardly be able to translate all the terms. It is important to be assiduous in work, not trying to translate an unfamiliar word "somehow".

In technical texts there are usually a lot of drawings, tables and illustrations, therefore it is also important to make special formatting – to translate signatures under the drawings, for example. Our translation agency will provide it with a bang! We can also ensure two our experts to work in a team – a translator who will make a simple and clear translation of the text, and a technical expert who will correct terms. The price of any technical translation depends on the necessity to work in team and on nuances of formatting. Besides, it is important to take into account how narrow the specialization of the text is and how rare the expert in this field is needed.

Why do we guarantee the quality of technical translations, being made at our bureau?

Because we:
  • stand to the principles to transfer the content of the original text as closely as possible;
  • use scientific and official style;
  • collate with regulating documents while formatting the text;
  • keep only professionals on the positions of technical translators;
  • use SAT means (Systems of Translation Memory) to write down there the translations of terms and not to confuse them;
  • use glossaries and provide the access to each member of any translation team-group;
  • edit style and terms of all the texts, which have been translated, and also check the formatting of original and finished texts.
